What lag actually is
Lag here is almost never the app being slow: it is packets arriving late. Video chat is the most demanding thing your connection does, needing steady upload as well as download. A network that streams video fine can still choke on two-way live calls.
Switch the network
The single most effective test: move from mobile data to Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi to mobile data, then rejoin with Stop and Start. If one network is clean and the other stutters, you have your answer. On the Umingle app, this takes ten seconds and beats every settings tweak.
Free up bandwidth
Pause cloud photo backups, stop downloads, and kick bandwidth hogs off the Wi-Fi while you chat. On mobile data, drop video quality expectations: sit closer to the router on Wi-Fi, or move nearer a window on cellular for a stronger signal. More phone-specific tweaks live in the Android tips guide.
Time your sessions
Random chat services congest at night when everyone is bored at once. If matches crawl at 11 PM but fly at 4 PM, that is server load, not your phone. Off-peak sessions are smoother and, as a bonus, the conversations tend to be better.
When it is not you
Sometimes the stranger's connection is the bottleneck: frozen on their side while your preview runs smooth. Skip and rematch instead of troubleshooting your own setup. If every chat lags equally, though, circle back to the general fixes guide and work the list.
