Stop the battery killer
Android's battery optimization loves to murder video calls. Go to Settings, Apps, Umingle for Android, Battery, and set it to Unrestricted. This single change ends the mystery mid-chat disconnects that plague aggressive skins from several manufacturers.
Data saver and video
Data Saver mode throttles background data and can stutter live video. Either exempt the app or toggle Data Saver off during sessions. On metered connections, prefer text mode: it uses a fraction of the data and works fine on weak signals.
Permissions that stick
Some Android versions revoke permissions from unused apps after a few months. If the app suddenly shows a black screen after a break, recheck Camera and Microphone in App info before anything else. The install guide covers the first-run flow if you are starting fresh.
Notifications and focus
Turn on Do Not Disturb during video chats. An incoming call can hijack the mic and camera mid-conversation, and a buzzing notification drawer is distracting on camera. Your stranger sees your screen focus break in real time.
Old phone survival
