Starting a text chat
Open the Umingle chat app, tap Text, optionally add interests, and hit Start. Matching usually takes a few seconds. You will see a typing indicator when the stranger starts writing, which is your cue that a human is actually there.
The anatomy of the chat box
The interface is deliberately spare: a message log, an input field, a send button, and two exits (Next and Stop). There are no read receipts to obsess over and no profile to stalk. If you prefer faces to words, the video chat guide covers the camera side.
Openers that actually work
"Hi" dies in seconds. Reference the shared interest if you set one: "you like football too, which team?" beats "hey" every time. Ask something answerable, not something deep. The goal of line one is a reply, not a soulmate.
Keeping it alive
Trade questions instead of interviewing. One question, one answer, one follow-up, then volunteer something yourself. Our chat etiquette guide has the full social playbook, and it applies double in text where tone is invisible.
Knowing when to skip
One-word answers three times in a row mean the chat is over, whatever politeness says. Hit Next without guilt: the stranger is probably hoping you will. Save your energy for conversations with a pulse.
